We are an innovative organisation disrupting mathematics education
Changing attitudes
By addressing the issue of negative mindsets and low confidence, we inspire students to develop a growth mentality, embrace challenge and aspire to achieve more within mathematics
Up-Skilling students
Our approach develops all students holistically and prepares them for more advanced mathematical study and employment within an increasingly modern world
Raising attainment
We equip students with a deeper understanding of the mathematics curriculum and beyond through engagement with high level and contextualised mathematics
Classroom activity
The Math Pit is a collaborative real world mathematical challenge which requires pupils to dig themselves out of a learning pit autonomously. Pupils are put in a challenging, unfamiliar situation in which they must ‘strategise’ to solve a real world mathematical problem – thus getting themselves out of ‘the pit’. Pupils are assigned personal roles: facilitator, recorder, verifier and resource manager
Inter School Competitions
Schools select students to attend and compete in The Math Pit Challenge days, held in universities, and The Math Pit Grand Finale
Bespoke Mentoring
Winners receive bespoke mentoring by industry professionals and become Math Pit Ambassadors leading enrichment activities and peer tutoring in their own school and locality
Mathematics is essential for everyday life and understanding our world. It is also essential to science, technology and engineering, and the advances in these fields on which our economic future depends. It is therefore fundamentally important to ensure that all pupils have the best possible mathematics education. They need to understand the mathematics they learn so that they can be creative in solving problems, as well as being confident and fluent in developing and using the mathematical skills so valued by the world of industry and higher education.

“Maths has never been my strong point, nor has it really been my favourite thing. However I can’t thank you enough for not giving up on me when I was trying to give up on myself. I’ve learnt so much this year- mainly to just persevere in order to achieve. I now feel ready to take on Year 11.
Thanks Ms!”

Pupil“You have thought so incredibly carefully about the rationale behind all of the different elements of this lesson and how to meet the needs of your pupils. You are stretching and challenging your pupils through placing them in unfamiliar circumstances as they lead themselves through their learning”
Jenny Hoffman
Senior Lecturer in Professional Studies, Canterbury Christ Church University“This was truly an outstanding lesson”
Dr Nicola Bretscher
Lecturer in Mathematics Education, UCL-IOE“The students give you high praise as they leave the lesson, telling me how lucky they are to have you as their teacher and how much they are learning. The fact that you are doing this and applying this theory and thinking beyond the classroom demonstrates your absolute dedication to them and their progress”
